Someone close to me had a minor accident today (or rather, yesterday) morning. Fortunately, no one was injured. And both cars came up with relatively little damages...
It brings to mind though, how humans are so susceptible to the delusion of invincibility, if you go by the theory that everyone (yes including you!) has some sort of psychological illness/disability of some sort. For instance, the only thing that differentiates a mentally disabled person from a normal one is a certain IQ cutoff point set by man himself... Even the tests and definitions of diseases are subjective. The human mind has always been 'analog', not 'discrete'.
For some reason we tend to think that nothing will happen to us because nothing of the like has ever occurred to us before. Never mind that people all around are already getting into accidents and such... I guess it can be partly attributed to a tinge of overconfidence and youthful gungho-ness..
I'm guilty of that too... I used to think that accidents can't possibly happen to me when I was much younger. After all, I'm me! Someone different so things shouldn't happen to me!!! It made a lot of sense somehow lol.. I've improved since then.. Nowadays, I see people in the news getting shot down, undergoing cold turkies, drowning, dying for no apparent reason etc... And I think to myself, "Nah.. What are the odds?". A little improvement from foolhardiness... After all, paranoia is a disease in itself.
Man is far from invincible. My last injury from wushu (always stretch before doing a 360 jumping kick!) left me with less mobility. Whoever thought going into army with a PES C status could still leave me with ankle laxity by the time I ORDed?
Hmmm.. Moral of story? Watch your step and take up insurance :)
*Speaking of delusions of invincibility, 'bully' is a really cool game to play!!
