Today's sermon was a pretty simple one, touching on the subject of enduring trials. Once again we've covered three verses, and from these three came three lessons on enduring trials.
James 5:10
Take my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction.
The prophets of the OT have not had an easy time at all, as the apostles of the NT, Jeremiah for instance... Standing against multitudes, and having no weapon other than the faith of God itself; it is a task not easily undertaken. This verse teaches us to endure difficult people. To speak proudly of the Christian faith is in itself not an easy thing to do in front of unforgiving non-believers.. Even more so when physical action is taken. Many a times have I stumbled and got my tongue in a knot when I attempt to introduce the Gospel. For one, I fear the possible rejection and confrontation that may come after... And I don't exactly like getting on the nerves of friends either. Most of us have it easy though.. At least we won't get shot in the head when caught with bible in hand. Hopefully, with this in mind, we'll do better.
James 5:11
Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.
The next thing we need to learn is to endure circumstances. I'm sure many of us will never have to experience what Job had. From a powerful man to one who had lost all ten children, his entire material possessions and even his health... And still praising and looking up to God. Yet, many of us blame God for the tiniest of things.. Sprained ankle? God's fault. Lousy grades? God's fault. Pimple on face? God's fault. No one said life was going to be easy. In fact, we're told to expect struggles! Victory comes when you hold on to your faith in the face of struggles. Many a times, these struggles only serve to strengthen us, spiritually and mentally.
James 5:12
But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest you fall into condemnation.
Last but not lest, endure against speaking rashly. The temptation to speak before thinking comes easily to all, especially in moments of extreme emotion. While we are unable to control the the people and circumstance around us, we are able to control our tongue ( I can roll my tongue.. Can you? :P ). But yet, enduring against speaking rashly can possibly be the hardest to achieve. Do not make promises you cannot keep, refrain from swearing and lying and speak without aggression. Also, I think it will be wise to take this furthur, and relate it to enduring temptations.
If we manage to endure these factors, and still praise God for whatever He has given us, are we truly happy and content in this degraded world of ours.
