8But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Can man truly comprehend God? I think we can only obtain vague glimpses in fleeting moments of His true self... We may know in theory, that God transcends time for example, but can we truly know what it's like to have the past and future at the same time? We know the power He possesses, but do we actually appreciate the awe of that strength? We have heard of His mercy, but can anyone now see the full extent of His actions?
It is not easy to comprehend God, but He does provide glimpses in the daily hustle of our lives. The subtle placing of people and events; the silent prayer in desperate times; the blessings of hard labour... If we can just see with the eyes of faith, we can see beyond the physical happenings of the world. When Jesus was tied on the cross with Pilate supervising his death, the world saw a powerful man of office reigning over a frail, weak prisoner on his last day. But see with the eyes of faith, and you'll find the awe and love of God's son, who was in total surety of the events to take place, and a poor officer reluctantly swept along with the flow.
No, we cannot fully comprehend God. But what we can see is enough for us to believe.
